News from the past - World War II. Japan's surrender

New York Rejoices
One of the largest celebrations in the history of America happened on Times Square as news of the final surrender reached
the masses. Since last month, spirits have been unusually high in the area with bars, cinemas and restaurants reportingt
greater than normal trade.
As early as 7:00 A.M, crowds of people began to gather in the popular square, eagerly awaiting the news of Japan's surren-
der.
Walking amongst the crowds, i learned that many refused to believe the war was over until the armistic had been signed,
but at 9:00 A.M the end of the war became official as news bursts of the ceasefire were broadcast to the mainland and
announced over the heads of the waiting crowds.
The cheers and celebrations were reported to be audible for more than twenty city blocks and as of the time of this writing,
the crowd still grows with every hour that passes. Although the streets have been filled with spirited gatherings for almost
a month now, today marked the official ending of the war that has taken such a toll on our country and as such, the celebra-
tions are expected to continue well into the morning. Sunday, September 2, 1945.
